Tornados.net Recommends:

"How long does a tornado last? Tornadoes can last from several seconds to more than an hour. The longest-lived tornado in history is really unknown, because so many of the long-lived tornadoes reported from the early-mid 1900s and before are believed to be tornado series instead. Most tornadoes last less than 10 minutes. "

It varies a great deal. Some form, touch down only briefly (or not at all) and then dissipate. Other can run for well over an hour. It really just depends on how long the conditions favorable to their existance persist in the air. I hope this helps a little.

green tomatoes, stem-side down on window sill, will always turn red-ripe. sooner or later.

There is no set answer. Tornadoes will last as long as the conditions permit; that could be a few seconds, or it could be several hours.
